PHP2Shell Vulnerability: Is Your Website Safe? Here’s What You Need to Know

PHP2Shell vulnerability security update from britecode

If you’ve seen the news about the critical PHP2Shell vulnerabilities this week, you may be wondering whether your website is at risk. Here’s the short answer, followed by what you need to know in plain English.

The short answer: britecode-hosted websites are secure

If your website is hosted with britecode, you’re protected. Our hosting environments were patched as soon as the PHP security fixes were released on October 21, 2026, and our team is actively monitoring our servers. You don’t need to do anything.

Hosted somewhere else? Here’s what to do

These vulnerabilities are in PHP itself, the software running on the web server. That means updating WordPress, your theme or your plugins will not fix them on its own. Your hosting provider needs to update PHP on the server.

Reach out to your hosting provider and ask them to confirm your site is running a patched PHP version: 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, 8.5.12 or newer. Not sure who to call or what to ask? We’re happy to contact your hosting provider on your behalf and make sure everything is secure.

What is PHP2Shell?

PHP2Shell is the name for two critical vulnerabilities in the PHP programming language, tracked as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619. They were discovered by security researchers at Wiz, and the PHP project released emergency patches on October 21, 2026, a day earlier than planned after the vulnerability IDs leaked online.

Both vulnerabilities are rated 9.2 out of 10 (critical) on the CVSS severity scale.

Why this isn’t just a WordPress problem

PHP is the behind-the-scenes language that builds web pages on the server. It powers WordPress, WooCommerce, Drupal, Joomla, Magento, Laravel and countless custom websites and web apps. According to W3Techs, PHP runs about 69.3% of all websites whose server technology can be identified. That’s roughly 7 in 10 websites on the internet.

So whether you have a blog, an online store, a membership portal or a custom application, if it runs on PHP, it was potentially affected.

What the vulnerabilities can do

  • Take over a server without logging in. An attacker can send a specially crafted request to an unpatched server and run their own commands on it, with no username or password needed.
  • Expose sensitive information. The flaws can leak data from the server’s memory, including passwords, login sessions and API keys.
  • Affect a decade of websites. Every PHP version released in the last ten years is affected, going back to PHP 5.4.
  • Hit many server setups, including Apache, PHP-FPM, LiteSpeed and others.

Why it matters for your business

A compromised website can be defaced, used to steal customer information, loaded with malware or spam, or used to redirect visitors to scam pages. For online stores, that can mean stolen customer data, Google warning labels, lost sales and lasting damage to your reputation.

Security firms reported exploitation attempts shortly after the news broke, and more than 5 million PHP servers were estimated to be exposed online. That’s why patching quickly matters.

Recommended steps to keep your website secure

Five recommended steps to protect your website from the PHP2Shell vulnerability
  1. Confirm your PHP version is patched. Ask your host, or check your hosting control panel, for PHP 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, 8.5.12 or newer.
  2. Upgrade if you’re on PHP 8.1 or older. Official patches only cover PHP 8.2 and newer. Upgrading can affect older themes and plugins, so test it on a staging site first (or let us handle it).
  3. Keep WordPress, themes and plugins up to date. This doesn’t fix PHP2Shell, but it closes other doors attackers use.
  4. Change important passwords. As a precaution, update your website admin, hosting and database passwords, especially if your site wasn’t patched right away.
  5. Keep backups and a firewall in place. Make sure you have recent off-site backups and a web application firewall (WAF), such as Cloudflare, protecting your site.

Frequently asked questions

Is my britecode-hosted website safe?

Yes. Our servers were patched when the fixes were released, and we’re continuing to monitor them.

Do I need to update WordPress to fix this?

Updating WordPress is always a good idea, but it won’t fix PHP2Shell. The fix has to be applied to PHP on your web server by your host.

How do I know if my host has patched my site?

Ask your hosting provider which PHP version your site runs, or send us a support request and we’ll check for you.

What if my site runs an old version of PHP?

PHP 8.1 and older don’t receive official patches. You’ll need to upgrade to a supported version. We can test and handle the upgrade for you.
