Why WooCommerce Order Numbers Are Not Sequential

WooCommerce order numbers are not consecutive by default. If you look at your store’s orders, you will notice gaps in the sequence — for example, jumping from order #101 straight to #105. Nothing is missing, and no orders have been lost or deleted. This is normal WordPress behavior.

Why WooCommerce order numbers have gaps

The reason comes down to how WordPress and WooCommerce manage data behind the scenes:

  • The shared ID database: By default, WooCommerce orders are treated as a “post type” inside the WordPress database. WordPress uses a single, unified auto-increment ID system for almost everything it stores — and your order number is simply that ID.
  • Number-consuming entities: Every time you create a new page, write a blog post, upload a media file (like a product image), or save a draft, WordPress assigns the next available ID number to that item. Those numbers are then unavailable to orders.
  • Abandoned checkouts & cart states: WooCommerce often reserves or generates temporary database entries to save checkout states. If a customer abandons their cart, that number is consumed by the database but never becomes a visible order.

Is this a problem?

No. Gaps in order numbers do not affect your store, your customers, or your reporting. Each order still has a unique, permanent number, and your order totals and counts remain accurate. A gap does not mean an order failed or disappeared — it usually just means WordPress handed that number to a media upload, a revision, or an abandoned checkout.

One practical side effect worth knowing: because the numbers are not consecutive, customers and competitors cannot infer how many orders your store has actually received.

What if I need sequential order numbers?

Some businesses need clean, gap-free numbering for bookkeeping, accounting exports, or invoice matching. That is possible, but it requires an extension that assigns its own order-number sequence on top of the WordPress ID — for example a sequential order number plugin, or the numbering features built into some invoicing/accounting integrations.

A few things to keep in mind before making that change:

  • Sequential numbering applies going forward. Existing orders keep the numbers they already have unless they are renumbered deliberately.
  • The underlying WordPress ID still exists behind the scenes — the plugin simply displays and searches by the friendly number instead.
  • Any system connected to your store (accounting, shipping, fulfillment, ERP) should be checked so both sides reference the same order number.
